DESCRIPTION

Koh Preah is a village situated on a small island in the middle of the Mekong River and is 35km from Stung Treng Town. Koh Preah is an untouched tourist destination. It is rich in natural resources and is an enriching experience to understand Khmer culture and the Cambodia rural way of life; providing insights into local beliefs and cooking skills of the local people.

The trip to Koh Preah by bicycle is an unforgettable travel experience. You will cycle along the local gravel roads following the Mekong River, passing many local families and their rice fields. The stretch of the Mekong to the South of Koh Preah is one of the most beautiful parts of the Mekong River, especially when travelling downstream through the twisting, intertwining channels, painted with small uninhabited islands, undulating sandbanks, rapids and flooded forests.

This longer stay on the island of Koh Preah will bring you opportunities to experience more of the local village life in rural Cambodia.

FACILITIES

Home stay accomodation is available at the island:

  • bedrooms in a traditional house with bed, mattress, mosquito net, cotton sheets, blankets, pillows
  • local style toilet and shower outside from the house
  • electricity limited
  • provides drinking water

LOCAL AREA & ACTIVITIES

 

  • Meeting with the village elders to learn more about the history of Koh Preah.
  • A boat trip to visit the areas around Koh Preah, visiting the circle rock formation and in the dry season the group can go swimming whilst taking the boat trip
  • A local steam bath and blessing by a local nun.
  • Involve in helping community work such as harvesting rice, planting rice, building a community center, road construction, etc. The work will be dependent on the time of the year of the tour.

GETTING THERE & TRANSPORT

Koh Preah is an island located in the south of Stung Treng. Travelling from Pnhom Penh/Siem Reap, use one of the many buses and VIP minibuses to reach Stung Treng city. 

From there you can take a boat to Koh Preah.

If you are travelling from Kratie, you should  be able to find a boat  to Koh Preah as well.

This community offers a large range of biodiversity, Koh Preah is rich in natural resources, provides a perfect insight of the Khmer culture and a stunning setting in order to watch the seriously endangered Irrawaddy River Dolphin and many types of rare birdlife. Guests will be hosted by a local family and given a true taste of Cambodian rural life.

Travellers get the chance to live and experience the life of local village people firsthand when staying at a traditional home-stay on Koh Preah. The host family will involve you in cooking, rice planting and other livelihood activities. Additional activities are: visiting the flooded forest, boating to see river views, swimming and relaxing on the river beaches (dry season only) as well as gaze upon stunning sunsets and shining sunrises.

1 – 2 DAYS STAY

If you are staying on the island for sevral days, there is an opporuntity to:

Cycle around the island – Following the river provides the perfect opportunity to see local villages and pass by the small wooden houses of those who live along the river. At times there will be long open roads with rice fields, or the tall coconut palms which may shade the way. 

Take a boat trip – take a small fishing boat to see the interesting rock formations off the island, located in the heart of the nearby rain forest! This is believed to be a magic rock by the local people. The group will then return in the evening for dinner and the first night in the homestay.
